Okay, I've tried 2 different filing systems. When I very first started using coupons (several years ago) I got a little puse size organizer with 13 openings. And then when I got serious about my couponing I went to the filing system where you use a notebook and don't clip your coupons until you need to use them. My problem with that system is what happens when I'm in the store, find a great clearance item and know I have an equally great coupon, but it's in a stack of coupons...what do I do? Most of the time I have to just pass the deal up because I don't have the time to search through hundreds of papers for one coupon. So, I decided I was going to try another method I found online.
First I started out with a small shoe box size plastic box. I made sure it had clip on locks for the top in case my kids get a hold of it. That could cause a serious meltdown for me. :) Then, I found small notecards and these little clip things that are sturdy enough that when they stick up they won't break down. They are called Clip-rite and I found them at Target, but I'm sure other stores have them too.
Then I labeled each of the clips with catagories. I will make sure to list those out another time (just not enough right now). Say I have a Personal Catagory. I will then do subcatagories...hair, teeth, eyes, medicine, vitamins, shaving, deodorant, lotion...you get the idea. This way when I need to find a coupon I don't have to search through a huge stack of coupons.
I make sure to put my main catagories on the left hand side and then my subcatagories tabs are on the right hand side. I've just been putting this together for the last few days, so it will take me some time to figure out which method I will like better. The only down side I can see to this way is all the clipping of the coupons. I don't really want to clip every single one, so my thought is I may clip the ones I want to use and use a notebook (that I keep at home) with the ones I may use if there is a good enough deal.
I do carry my coupons with me. My husband and son said they would be more embarassed by the box instead of the folder....but, my husband realizes that box is going to save us a ton of money...so he said carry it! Of course he doesn't shop with anymore...I guess I take too long now. :)
I'll post later this weekend what my catagories are so you can get an idea of what I'm breaking things down in to.
